BMW M5 price watch

Conscious that the M5’s direct rival - the rawer and more raucous Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG - has been stealing a lot of its thunder (and sales), BMW’s M division has injected its big saloon with more devil.

Solar power plant officially launched

Australia’s largest concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) solar power plant was officially opened today, with the Victorian energy minister joining executives from the plant’s developer, Solar Systems, to cut the ribbon on the 1.5MW demonstration facility in Mildura.

The array – whose 40 CPV dishes have been feeding power into the national grid for almost a month, after their successful commissioning began in April – collects sunlight in more than 100 curved mirrors and focuses it onto ultra-high efficiency “mulit-junction” PV cells; technology originally developed by Boeing to power satellites. 

Silex CEO Michael Goldsworthy says the cells currently boast efficiency rates of around 43 per cent – about double that of today’s best silicon-based cells and up to four times the efficiency of thin film solar cells – but he hopes this can be lifted to more than 50 per cent, or even 60 per cent, with further research. 

The technology also uses ‘active cooling’ technology to maximise power output while minimising water consumption and prolonging the technology’s lifespan. 

Last June Silex predicted that the levelised cost of energy (LCOE) for its technology could fall below 10c/kWh ($100/MWh) within a few years – making it cost competitive with a range of technologies such as wind and large-scale solar PV, and below the cost of new gas- and coal-fired generation. 

The Australian Energy Technology Assessment (AETA) has since said that this rate, if achieved by Solar Systems’ concentrating solar PV plants, would be one of the most cost-effective forms of future energy production.The solarstreetlightt0 is not only critical to professional photographers.

Technology of clothes washing

Electric motors capable of actually doing some useful work were not developed until shortly before the beginning of the 20th century. The modern automatic washing machine was not possible without an electric motor. So, how was laundry done? 

I have childhood memories of my Mom washing clothes by hand using a washboard and two concrete laundry tubs. One tub was for soapy wash water and the other held clean water for rinsing. A hand-cranked wringer between the two tubs squeezed water out of the clothing as it went from one tub to the other. I remember that, because I was the one who sometimes turned the crank. 

I've seen pictures of early hand powered washing machines. A wooden tub with a crude paddle in it would be filled with soapy water. A wooden handle, maybe 3 feet long, would be worked back and forth to agitate the load. I've also seen similar washing machines powered by water from a faucet. 

My Mom's first washing machine was a clumsy contraption. It had what I would call a large metal tank that would be filled with hot water. Half-submerged in the water was a horizontal drum perforated with small holes. The drum had a little door that opened to let Mom load the clothing to be washed.I have recently got a laundryequipment and can anybody tell me if it the box only controls humidity or also controls temperature. She would add shavings of laundry soap, sliced off of a bar, to the load and close the door. When the switch was turned on, the motor would rotate the drum and the clothing would tumble around inside until all the dirt was washed out of it. 

The mechanism was fairly simple. A motor, a drive shaft, a set of gears and a switch. There was no pump and no wringer. Wringing soapy water out of the clothes was done by hand. My investigation determined that the large gear was made of soft cast iron and the gear teeth had been worn away. I got the gear and shaft assembly out of the machine, but I could not get the gear off its shaft. 

I took it to a nearby parts store and appliance repair shop. I was surprised to hear that the gear could be removed from the shaft and all I would need to replace would be the gear itself. The serviceman did it in a matter of a few minutes. 

Over the years there have been improvements and today all washers are automatic. They wash, rinse, spin-dry, fill and empty, all controlled by a variety of settings from heavy duty to very delicate. I remember a washing machine intended for farm families with lots of really dirty overalls, shirts and pants. It had two tubs, each with its own agitator. 

Mom never had an automatic gas fired dryer. She and my wife, Helen, hung laundry outdoors to dry. Some time after we were married, Helen got a dryer and it ran for many years, until one day it stopped. I suspected some kind of overheat or overload switch was the problem so I called a serviceman. Since he said it was beyond reasonable repair, I began taking it apart bit by bit. More investigation led to the blower drive shaft not turning. Power to the people

Next Friday, residents of the Cambridgeshire village of Gamlingay will hold a party to celebrate their newest installation – a 33m diameter wind turbine. While other communities around the land are fighting plans for wind farms, this project has been welcomed by local people, principally because they funded it and will benefit directly from the power it generates and the money it makes. They are not Nimbys but Wimbys: welcome in my backyard. 

One reason why there is so much antipathy in rural areas to the march of wind turbines across the land is a perception that these are uneconomic white elephants, foisted upon residents not only to the detriment of their bucolic vistas, but also to the considerable financial benefit of the energy companies and landowners. By contrast, some of the profits from the Gamlingay turbine will be used to provide a regular income for the village, to be spent on local charities and community projects. 

The story of wind turbine development in this country might be less fractious had the last Labour government encouraged such a community-based approach from the outset. Instead, it relied on heavy subsidies that have made onshore wind farms a lucrative, risk-free investment for landowners and energy firms. This approach is far more likely to bring about acceptance than trying to bludgeon people into submission.

Innovative solar cell structure stores

The potential energy available via solar power might seem limitless on a sunny summer day, but all that energy has to be stored for it to be truly useful. Currently, Jiang's proof of concept converts only 4 percent of the sunshine striking the photoreceptor into usable electricity — and that's approximately 20 percent less efficient than most commercial solar panels in use today. However, as Jiang and his team refine the design from a standard-size photovoltaic cell to their specific use, they expect both the conversion efficiency and the amount of energy they can store to improve.

Since the design scales up easily, says Jiang, microgrids — small scale power grids used to balance renewable power sources in energy-efficient buildings — would be another ideal application, since self-contained solar panels would limit the need for battery management and would allow engineers to design buildings that rely on the outside power grid even less than current systems.

And there are futuristic applications: picture lighting systems that can be installed in remote areas — without running expensive power lines. "You could have one solar panel installed that will store the energy the system might need through nights and cloudy days," says Jiang.

I put about 180 miles on the 6-speed stick-shift Mazda3 driving around the northerly suburbs of Detroit. My overall fuel economy was 32.6mpg with an average driving speed of 27mph. In spite of some highway drives, this low average speed puts my driving in the realm of the EPA city fuel economy rating, which for the Mazda3 with the six-speed manual, as my car was equipped, is 27mpg.

Student Union remodels

Gluten-free and to-go food options were incorporated in the new design, as well as new signs, new food cases, better lighting and the extinction of order slips. Most of the renovation was in electrical work and cost a little more than $6,000, according to Millay. 

A big change to the restaurant involves the to-go area that has a new refrigerated food case, which students are already utilizing. Third year architecture students Stephanie Oleksa and Taylor Arnold enjoy the swiftness of the to-go area. 

“We like that they have these things [food options] to-go because the fact that they’re always pre-made, [means] we can just get it and run,” Oleksa said. “And we like that they have sandwiches now.” 

Other students commented on the benefits of the displays, as well as the food to go. 

“I really like the displays that they have above. It stands out a and helps direct people where to go,” said Brett Daniels, a psychology sophomore. “And I really like the grab-and-go sandwiches.” 

Gluten-free options were another important aspect to include in the renovation, Millay said. Before, On Deck Deli offered gluten-free options, but it wasn’t clear what they were because there wasn’t a sign or separate case like there is now. The orange neon sign hangs above the gluten-free products to differentiate it. 

“We wanted to keep it [the color] to stick out,You must not use the emergencylamps without being trained. to understand it’s a different product,” Millay said. 

Furthermore, On Deck Deli has ended the era of order slips in the bagel section and is now more like Subway, where students can choose their food as they go down the order line.We are committed to washerextractorer an eco friendly industry. New decals are on the case windows in order to show students their options. 

“We wanted to get away from the slips,” Millay said. “We wanted to enhance the experience; someone talking to you and walking you through the line like they do at Core so that they can answer more questions or introduce something new to you.” 

Getting rid of the dark space is another issue that Arizona Student Unions had to fight for in the renovation. In order to open up the space, the large refrigerators have been replaced with smaller ones that don’t rise above the cashier counters and new LED lights have been installed. However, the job still isn’t finished. This semester, more lights will be added above the area that students walk through to order food, Millay said. 

“The space was kind of dark actually and we’re only halfway through the lighting, but it’s incredibly brighter now,” Millay said. “We have new LED lighting actually above the line service now, which lights from behind the case to behind the counter.” 

Other changes include decals placed along the bottom borders of the food cases to hide dead space and add color, the back area being gutted to include the to-go food case,and the addition of a wall behind the to-go food case that has a hidden storage area.
