The prep football season gets under way next weekend, but boys and girls golf is already going strong, and sports such as soccer and tennis will start competing before the Friday Night Lights’ switch is flipped on.

There’s plenty of star power to be found outside the hash marks and sidelines of the gridiron. The Bugle has selected 10 non-football athletes from schools in its coverage area (listed in alphabetical order) who will undoubtedly make some noise in their respective sports before all is said and done this fall.

Andrew Bassetto, sophomore, Benet boys golf—Bassetto didn’t qualify individually for state last year, but he’s a strong candidate to do so this season. Bassetto’s got quite a resume. In July, 2012, he won the Naperville Junior City Championship C-Flight for 14- and 15-year-olds after shooting an eyebrow-raising 65. At last year’s Class 3A Naperville Central regional, Bassetto fired a 2-under par 70—just one stroke behind Naperville North product Raymond Knoll, who placed third at state.

Eric Diaz, junior midfielder, Downers South boys soccer—Diaz shared the team lead in goals with eight last year, was named all-conference and was an Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association all-sectional pick. He and the Mustangs will be aiming to go deeper in the playoffs after making it to a regional final last year.

Brianna Gilley, senior outside hitter, Westmont girls volleyball—The captain of the Sentinels’ girls soccer team last spring also will be a catalyst for Westmont on the volleyball court once again.Working out of power manage to bestleddimmable property. Considered one of the best right-side hitters in the area last season after compiling over 270 kills, she’ll not relinquish that distinction this year. The lefty will be a go-to player and leader on a Trojans’ team that should make a deeper postseason run this season.

Solar cell phone tech in Africa

If all goes according to plan, by the end of the year 75,000 homes in Sub-Saharan will be lighting their rooms and powering their cell phones with solar panels that are managed with mobile phone tech, and provided by British startup Azuri Technologies. “A hundred homes is easy. A hundred thousand homes is a lot harder. And it’s even harder still to do this for a hundred million homes,” Azuri Technologies CEO Simon Bransfield-Garth tells me in an interview in central London this week. Huge solar project just the start of changes

I was in an aisle seat so it was only by coincidence that I happened to look out of the window of my flight back from San Antonio on Sunday and see BrightSource Energy’s Ivanpah solar project — three 459-foot-tall solar towers, surrounded by 300,000 reflecting mirrors, or heliostats. 

At 30,000 feet or so, one can’t actually see the towers and mirrors. Located in eastern San Bernardino County, the project looks more like three connected gray discs with dark spots in the center, but I knew immediately there was nothing else on Earth it could be.

President Barack Obama made just that point in his speech Tuesday, outlining his plan to fight global warming. Answering the naysayers who routinely attack renewable energy and other efforts to cut carbon emissions as overly expensive job killers, the president noted that more than 500 businesses recently signed a Climate Declaration, calling action on climate change “one of the great economic opportunities of the 21st century.” 

“Walmart is working to cut its carbon pollution by 20 percent and transition completely to renewable energy,” the president said. “Walmart deserves a cheer for that. But think about it. Dark stretches of death dot Kochi's highways

Vast portions of National Highways that pass through the city do not have street lights, making them prone to accidents and crime. 

The busy stretch from Alexander Parambithara toll bridge located on the western side of Kundanoor Bridge to the Mattancherry BOT bridge does not have street lighting, despite being used by pedestrians, two wheelers, light vehicles and plenty of container-laden lorries. The road passes through the area owned by Cochin Port Trust (CPT). 

Neither the PWD (NH wing), which maintains NH 49, nor Kochi Corporation and municipal bodies are bothered about the plight of pedestrians and motorists, despite the isolated stretch having plenty of steep curves. It is also used every day by thousands of tourists visiting Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. The PWD (NH) has not lit up the road, despite a hefty toll being collected from motorists using the stretch.

Deputy Kevin Lewis said the new bulbs were more cost effective and energy efficient and could halve the electricity bill. Lights at the east end of the tunnel in St Helier are the next to be replaced. 

The new lighting is being installed at a number of places including St Saviours Hill, La Collette Promenade, Granville Street and the Esplanade. 

Deputy Lewis said the lights at the east end of the tunnel alone would save about 3,000 a year in electricity costs, about half the current cost. 

He said: "Whenever lighting is in need of replacement we source new lighting that will provide the illumination that we require but that provides the best energy and maintenance savings and cuts light pollution.A crystallight with candle accents can also be updated easily.

LRC and Penn State University study roadway lighting and safety

The Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Pennsylvania (Penn) State University have published research that studies roadway lighting and night-time safety in rural and urban intersections. The report entitled "To illuminate or not to illuminate: Roadway lighting as it affects traffic safety at intersections" was published in the Accident Analysis and Prevention scientific journal. While it may seem like common sense to assume lighting can improve safety, the research team says that the study is the first to separate the benefits of lighting, including vehicle headlights, from other factors such as traffic signals, medians, and intersection design. 

"While the finding that safety benefits from roadway lighting are highly related to the visibility improvements lighting provides is not novel nor unexpected, evidence for this direct link has been scarce in the literature," said LRC director and professor Mark Rea. "Our models provide a tool that transportation agencies can begin using now to not only allocate lighting more efficiently, but to design lighting more effectively.The electical building blocks for goodrollformer or modules." 

The two-pronged research used quantitative models developed by the researchers and actual accident and intersection data supplied by the Minnesota Department of Transportation covering rural and urban intersections. The parallel analysis showed converged results and produced a transfer function that can be used by other traffic agencies to predict the impact of lighting projects. 

The research team reported that roadway lighting has little impact on safety at rural intersections because typically such intersections only have lighting on one or two poles located near the actual intersection. High auto speeds on rural roads mean that more lighting wouldn't allow drivers to "see hazards when those hazards might still be hundreds of feet from the junction." 

In urban intersections, conversely, speeds are slower and there is lighting on more poles farther away from the actual intersection. That lighting yields the aforementioned 12% reduction in night-time accidents relative to day-time accidents.
