Our enlightened age

I needed to replace a light fixture. The old fluorescent tube light, faithful for lo these many years, had broken. It had lighted my kitchen for over 25 years, faithfully.
My son suggested I look at some LED fixtures. After all, the LED bulbs are the latest on the market. At least last time I checked.

A store fixture man at Lowe's led me to the LED fixtures on display in his store.

I screamed when I saw the prices.

Then he showed me where the LED replacement bulbs were located.

One large bulb cost $15 on sale, originally $25.

I decided, quickly, that I would leave the LED fixture on the display wall.

I selected another cheaper fixture and bought four small corkscrew bulbs to light it since bulbs weren't included. The package of four cost $8.

Have you counted the light bulbs in your house?

I did this morning and was surprised to count 41 asundry bulbs.

Now that sounds like a lot, but it really isn't. If you go around your house, room by room, you will be surprised to see how many light bulbs you have. Those ceiling fan lights alone usually hold from three to five bulbs.

http://www.futureviewlighting.com/index.asp?controller=Products&action=view&pid1=16&id=44

I counted all the bulbs in my house, including seven recessed lights in the kitchen and dining room. But not counting the nightlights, the curio cabinet light or refrigerator bulb.

Hold on a minute. I forgot the four fluorescent bulbs in the basement. That brings the total to 45.

That adds up to a lot of electricity when they are all burning. But at any given time, there are three or four burned out.

Last year I started buying those new corkscrew (curlycue) bulbs to replace some of the old general purpose incandescent bulbs.

The newer bulbs, much pricier, are replacing the old standard bulbs which I've heard won't be on the market much longer.

It is advertised that the corkscrew bulbs will last from nine to 12 years and are cost efficient.

So I bought some. One of the corkscrew bulbs burned out in three months. Another broke in my son's hand as he was replacing a burned out bulb for me.

My thinking is that those pricier bulbs should be more durable than that. Nevertheless I now have three of those bulbs in my living room lamps.

And I can verify right now that if you want to be able to see, buy the bright light not the warm light. There's a big difference.

While writing this column, my thoughts went back to my childhood days when I lived in the house with my mom and dad and two brothers and a sister.

After trying to get us to turn off the lights when we left a room, my dad tried another tactic.

He told me that every time I flipped a light switch it cost him ten cents.

After that I felt guilty anytime I switched on a light. And I tried to be more conservative with his money. I didn't want to be the one to send him to the poorhouse.

Our house in those days was lighted with incandescent bulbs. All these fancier bulbs had not been invented. Thomas Edison would have been surprised at how far his electric light invention has evolved since 1879.

County May Spend $300K To Replace Light Bulbs

Orange County leaders could spend over $300,000 of taxpayer money to replace light bulbs and signs. WFTV crunched the numbers Monday to find out if the spending is worth it.

There are more than 1,000 lit street signs across Orange County, and 160 could be getting an upgrade. The county wants to use nearly $300,000 in federal stimulus to switch to LED technology.

The fluorescent tube currently found inside of a light costs about $4 to replace and has to be changed every six months. The LED tube costs $500 to replace, but only needs to be changed every five years.

When fluorescent lights need to be changed, the county has to close down lanes for two hours. That will only happen every five years with LED lights.

But, will switching actually save money? WFTV looked at a five-year period.

Going LED would cost $291,000 in new signs plus $80,000 for bulbs. That's $371,000. But county engineers said it would save $36,000 in electricity and $333,000 in parts and service. That suggests taxpayers would almost break even in five years.

"If it broke even in five years, do you think it's a good return, or do you think it's not worth it right now?" WFTV reporter Nicole Papageorge asked a taxpayer.

"No right now it isn't worth it," one person replied.

"It's better for the environment, and it's most cost-efficient in the long run and we have to look at the long run," said resident Mary Harper.

Printer for LED lamps

The company’s 180x50 cm printing system will enable the fully automatic, inline production of such lamps.

In Europe, fluorescence lamps cannot be sold from 2012 and will be replaced by LED tubular lamps. Until now, the fully automatic manufacturing of such lamps was not possible because of limitations of the available inline printing systems. The Swiss manufacturer of production systems has now set out to develop an automatic production line for such products.

The line consists of a large-format printing system, multiple pick-and-place machines, and a curing or reflow system. The line can produce all lengths of LED tube lamps up to 180 cm.

The inline screen/stencil printer invented by Essemtec has a printable area of 180 x 50 cm that allows a panel for multiple 180 cm tubes to be printed in one run. The machine automatically loads and prints PCBs, and forwards them to the pick-and-place system. The inline conveyor system is designed to transport heavy aluminium-based PCBs commonly used for LED products.

One or more pick-and-place machines are installed inline to mount LEDs and other electronic components onto the PCB. The number of machines only depends on the desired line throughput.

The MIS (Management Information System) software, a development of Essemtec, automatically balances the workload over multiple machines to achieve maximum line output. Other functions of MIS include quality assurance, consumption and stock management, as well as the storage of production data for traceability.

For curing and soldering of the components onto the PCB, a high-performance reflow or curing system is installed inline. The oven is optimised for the needs of large and heavy boards, and provides constant process conditions at every position.

The entire line can be customised. For example, it can be completed with handling and inspection modules. For ESD or moisture-sensitive components, it is recommended to use the Tower automatic preservation system. Such components can be stored even without protective packaging.

Jerry D. Blakemore named VP, general counsel

Growing up in East Chicago Heights, Jerry D. Blakemore clearly recognized the importance of education and public service.

His father, J.D., who worked in the Youngstown Sheet and Tube steel mill for 31 years, held a seat on the village board and volunteered as a police officer and firefighter. His mother, Mattie, an operator for Illinois Bell, led his school’s PTA while she encouraged her three sons to read and study hard.

Blakemore, a first-generation college student who combined those passions toward a prestigious career in law and government, has been named vice president and general counsel at NIU.

Pending formal approval of the appointment by the NIU Board of Trustees at its Thursday, March 24, meeting, Blakemore will begin work April 1. He replaces Kenneth L. Davidson, who retired in December.

“Jerry Blakemore will be a tremendous asset to NIU. He is able to ‘hit the ground running’ and brings to his position an extensive expertise and knowledge about Illinois law, public policy and regulatory affairs,” NIU President John G. Peters said. “He is one of the most well-known and highly respected higher education attorneys in Illinois and the United States. NIU is fortunate to have attracted a senior executive of Mr. Blakemore’s reputation.”

“We’re excited to have him join our team. He brings broad experience in higher education in Illinois, and has already been tested in providing counsel to an independent governing board,” added Marc Strauss, chair of the NIU Board of Trustees. “This position is important to the Board of Trustees because the general counsel provides vital input into the workings of the board and supports the consideration of issues crucial to the development of NIU.”

Blakemore, vice president and general counsel at Southern Illinois University since 2005, is already setting an ambitious agenda that will continue to boost NIU’s presence in the region, state, nation and world.

“I’m not solely interested in how University Legal Services can turn out more contracts in a timely and technology-driven manner. What excited me about coming to NIU was joining such an experienced leadership team. It is clear that my previous experience in public policy, regulatory and legislative affairs and risk management will add value to NIU, further enhancing the critical role the university plays in the Chicago metropolitan region,” Blakemore said.

“Really, I want to help NIU continue to serve students by providing a quality education and making a difference in the lives of our students and the generations of students to come.”

Big Ten-bound Nebraska excited for fresh start

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska begins spring practice Saturday motivated by the challenges that await in the Big Ten and eager to forget the frustrations from its last year in the Big 12.

The preparations started right after the Holiday Bowl loss to Washington, the third loss in four games at the end of a 10-4 season.

"We can finally put it out of our minds because it's been weighing on us," safety Austin Cassidy said. "Nobody wanted to end the season like we did. It was a major disappointment. Everyone is excited to play football and put that behind us."

Coach Bo Pelini and his returning assistants immersed themselves in film of their new opponents. The inaugural schedule pits the Cornhuskers against Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan State teams ranked in the top 15 at the end of 2010. There are back-to-back trips to Penn State and Michigan, and a visit from border rival Iowa, too.

"We just more or less broke them down as if we were playing them next week," defensive coordinator Carl Pelini said. "We looked at their run games, their pass games. We did that prior to putting our playbook together just to make sure we accounted for everything we need to account for."

New Dimming LED Tube Lights at Taiwan International Lighting Show

Clean Light Green Light, a Michigan-based manufacturer of light-emitting diode-type lighting, has developed a new product that can be used to provide emergency illumination for critical buildings such as hospital and schools, with significant savings in energy and financial resources.

“We identified the need for this product while installing a pilot for a public school system and recognized that we could not execute a complete retrofit without this technology,” said David McKinney, chief executive officer of Mount Clemens-based CLGL.

“After researching and confirming that there was nothing available that could satisfy this important industry criterion, we moved quickly to address it,” McKinney said.

The new emergency backup system not only addresses previous challenges to retrofitting sensitive applications, but also creates a new revenue stream for CLGL as it represents a valuable option to all LED tube manufacturers.

LED lights are more expensive than conventional lighting, but it last longer and requires significantly energy for illumination.

The CLGL emergency backup system uses nickel-metal hydride batteries similar to batteries used in hybrid vehicle battery production, which can provide backup power use to be specified at 30, 60 or 90 minute intervals the CLGL EBS comes equipped with an LED test light and testing button for maintenance inspection and testing as well as a flame retardant case housing the system circuitry and battery.

The EBS is a significant breakthrough in increasing the viability of LED retrofits in the commercial, industrial, municipal lighting sectors and confirms CLGL as one of the manufacturers that sets industry performance standards.

The new product was nominated for the Engineering Society of Detroit Michigan’s Alpha Award for Innovation in Engineering and Technology.

“As an LED lighting pioneer, CLGL has developed the expertise to leverage cutting edge technologies and develop timely, industry leading solutions which propel the evolution and adoption of LEDs,” said CEO McKinney.

A wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of Global Dynamix Solutions GB PLC of London, England, CLGL develops, manufactures, and sells commercially viable LED lighting designed to retrofit into existing infrastructure as well as new construction.
