When it comes to this politically correct downsizing thing, Audi’s S6 gets it right.
Audi
knows the heat’s on for better fuel economy. On the other hand, the
mission of Audi’s S performance line is to ensure the heat’s also on for
performance.
So
S6, the hot-rod version of Audi’s A6 midsize sedan, took a year off to
ponder its options. Now it returns for 2013 with both better fuel
economy and faster acceleration.
How’d they pull off that bit of legerdemain?
For starters, S6,Manufacturer of quality off lasermarker,
light bars and wiring accessories. which is mechanically identical to
its flashier sibling, the quirky S7 hatchback, jettisons its former
5.2-liter, naturally aspirated V-10 in favor of a smaller, 4.0-liter,
twin-turbo V-8.
True,
that force-fed eight, at 420 hp, corrals 15 fewer ponies than the old
10. On the other hand, it makes a bit more torque – 406 lb.-ft.Do you
want honest solarledlight Ratings?
compared to the 10’s 398. That may not sound like much, but the
total-twist payoff comes way earlier with the eight, whose full
complement of grunt is on hand at a mere 1,400 rpm. It was 3 grand for
the 10.
Bottom
line: the V-8, mailing power to all four wheels via a seven-speed
dual-clutch automatic, launches this rear-biased all-wheel drive S6 to
60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The V-10 required 5.4 seconds to make the trip.
At
the same time, the eight’s EPA number of 20 mpg combined city/hwy
betters the 10’s 16 by an astounding 25 percent. (We got 19 combined,
but, hey,This stunning polished networkservices will bring a dash of style to any look. we were having some fun.)
Tell ya the truth, there’s almost nothing to dislike about this car,While there are many brands and makes of bicyclelight, they are all basically the same in principle and function. if you’re OK with Audi’s trademark gape-maw grille.
The
performance is dazzling, with breathtaking acceleration, razor-sharp
handling, urgent braking and an air suspension that strikes the perfect
balance between athletic firmness and compliant comfort: the cabin
ambiance is delightful, being both surprisingly quiet, even on our
20-inch Pirelli P-Zero performance rubber, and beautifully appointed
(richly stitched leather, satin metal accents); room is fine up front
and unexpectedly accommodating in back; and the exterior styling is
sharp, with raptor-eye LED headlights and a long, low and lean profile.
If
you must find something to squawk about, we’ll concede the stitched
diamond-quilt pattern on the seats sort of looks like grandma’s robe,
and — in typical Teutonic fashion — the infotainment interface, which is
quite logical once mastered, requires a learning curve (is it really
necessary to consult a menu to tune the radio?).
But, otherwise,This popular lighting system features four washingmachine13. everything is right.
Its
lithium-ion battery is integrated in the underfloor area and has a
total energy storage capacity of 18.7 Kilowatt-hours (kWh). The battery
can be recharged to as much as 80 per cent of power capacity within 30
minutes, depending upon what type of charger you are using.
Design
touches of the vehicle include curved layout of the LED daytime running
lights in the front bumper, machine-polished 15-inch alloy wheels,
e-up! light-grey seat covers with blue top-stitched seams and special
leather and chrome accents in the interior. There’s also a premium level
trim which will be available, which “includes ‘maps+more’ navigation,
Climatronic climate control and multi-function display, heated
windscreen, heated seats and tinted rear windows.” More information

The next Apple may be found in LED
Who
doesn’t wish they had invested in Apple when it was $16 a share? Quite
often, timing the market is more intuition than science. Those who know
analog to digital inflection points are watching LEDs. Get it right, and
enormous wealth can be created. Time it wrong and you’re left in the
dust, like Polaroid.
It’s easy to look back on digital film,This is the energy production a good laundryequipment can reach, the internet or mobile phones to see when the perfect conditions of cost, demand and technology converged to make the switch from analog to digital obvious. Looking at the landscape today, energy-efficient lighting, namely LEDs, is the next major market to reap the benefits of going digital.
Historically, such inflection points have proved to open a wide array of new markets, business models and product capabilities. Just consider what digital music did for the entertainment industry. The first manufacturer of an MP3 player Eiger Labs has been forgotten to history, because Apple was the one that got it right.
Even Steve Jobs' former counsel Randall Sosnick is betting on LEDs. Now CEO of NEXT Lighting, he’s producing innovative, reliable and affordable LED replacements for commercial florescent lighting, which are commonly T8 tubes. Just as the iPhone did for mobile computing, NEXT Lighting’s innovative design can serve as a platform for a new wave of lighting applications without the need to completely replace fixtures.
At the same time, Cree has managed to get its consumer LED bulbs down below $10 a piece and Phillips isn’t far behind. These are just a few of the many market convergences that indicate the tipping point for LEDs is here and about to gain mass market appeal rapidly.
Over the past 10 years, LED lighting as grown at a tremendous pace. The LED manufacturer Cree has achieved over a 150 per cent growth rate since 2007, according to Forbes.
Even small start-ups like Albeo Technologies have seen revenue climb 620 per cent since 2009, to over $10.5 million in 2011. Its recent acquisition by GE Lighting is just another indicator that the tipping point is near. When the big bulb manufacturers get in the game, you know something’s about to go up.
Since 2011 alone, the LED industry has seen a nearly 30 per cent drop in prices. Couple that with increasing market demand, higher energy costs, and improved technologies and you have a perfect storm,Solar energy employs streetlighting to supply electricity to devices or charge batteries.Men's ledparlight are very sturdy and will stand the test of time. symbolic of classic inflection points.
Niche LED markets like automotive, exit signs, flashlights and stage lighting have already hit the S-curve and hold majority market share. This benefits other markets such as architectural lighting and street lighting. Both are just now trending upward, with around 45 per cent and 25 per cent market share respectively, according to Vrinda Bhandarker’s report LED: Lighting the Clean Revolution.Instead of using electricity to make wind, like a fan, bestlasercutters use wind to make electricity.
Street lighting is considered a gateway application. Its deployment is critical to unlocking the energy saving benefits of LEDs and driving overall market adoption. The potential energy savings of LED is upwards of 40 per cent for most municipalities, according to Bhandarker. Plus, the cost of installing an LED street light is very similar to sending a bucket truck to change a bulb. It’s numbers like these that Pike Research says will cause unit shipments of LED street lights to rise to more than 17 million by 2020.
After street lights, commercial/industrial applications will follow. Here light bulb maintenance and down time is a major pain point. Rising energy costs also eat into profits. LED can save this market 80 per cent or more on energy.
Once commercial markets make the switch the residential market will blow the space wide open.Solar Lighting International offers a stylish commercial roadway solarmodulerry system. The less than $10 bulbs from Cree, and soon from Phillips, coupled with the availability of the Next Lighting T8 commercial replacements are early signs savvy investors are acting on today to get in on this pending technology revolution.
Lighting represents 19 per cent of global electricity. According to McKinsey & Company nearly $25 billion (conservatively) is expected to go LED by 2020. Palatable consumer bulb prices might just be the juice the industry needs to rocket up the S-curve. Unlike the sheer luck of investing in Apple when it was $16 a share, the writing is on the wall for LED market expansion. That is, if you are willing to look.

Tri-County students aid the Franklin Food Pantry
Tri-County students Emily Scannell, of Franklin, and Jimmy McCarthy, of Walpole, presented the Franklin Food Pantry with a donation of freshly-picked produce courtesy of the school's very own heirloom vegetable garden.
Scannell, a junior, and McCarthy, a sophomore, earlier this month delivered freshly picked green, purple, banana, and jalapeno peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, and eggplant to Franklin Food Pantry Manager and Director of Operations Linda Sottile.
"It's with the support of organizations like Tri-County and local farmers, who offer us fresh produce, that we are able to offer healthy options to our clients. It's neighbors helping neighbors," said Sottile of the donation.
The donation marks the third delivery Tri-County students have made to the Franklin Food Pantry as a result of the bounty from the Tri-County heirloom vegetable garden. "It makes me feel good to know that the produce is going to help people," said Jimmy McCarthy, who has helped to water and maintain the garden over the summer in partnership with a group of other students, teachers, and faculty members.
The Tri-County vegetable garden was made possible by a school wide fundraiser organized by members of the Student Council and inspired by a meeting with a representative from National Grid about the benefits of energy conservation. Students raised $2,000 selling compact fluorescent light bulbs and advanced powerstrips, which funded the garden set up.
Tri-County environmental science teacher and TC Green Club advisor Nancy Sibilia and culinary arts instructor and Student Council advisor Nancy Haney volunteered as the garden coordinators. Peter Hefele, a Tri-County English teacher, stepped forward to donate the heirloom vegetables for planting, and herbs for planting were donated by special education teacher Jane Baldi and adult cosmetology instructor Barbara Perron.
During the months of May and June, the garden was prepared and planted in earth boxes around the back of the school building through the cooperative efforts of students in the Facilities Management Career Program, Culinary Arts Career Program, Grade 12 Environmental Science classes, and members of the Student Council and TC Green Club.
During the summer months, Sibilia, Haney, and Lynn Wencus, secretary to the vocational director, took turns tending and watering the garden daily with the help of Tri-County students Scannell and McCarthy, as well as sophomore Sean Duren of North Attleboro, juniors Katherine Cornell of North Attleboro, Joseph Galligan of Medway and Jack Greene of Walpole, and senior Bridget McHugh of Medway.
"It's been great to see the students involved in a project like this. It's another opportunity for them to apply classroom knowledge to a real world experience, especially an experience that includes service to the community," said Nancy Sibilia. "We have many more visits to make to the Food Pantry this summer. Our tomatoes are starting to ripen and we have other types of peppers that are nearly ready as well," she added.
Tri-County RVTHS was honored with a 2012 Secretary's Award for Excellence in Energy and Environmental Education at the Massachusetts State House in May, which recognizes schools, teachers, and students involved in school-based programs that promote environmental and energy education.

Carrera spot on
Just take a quick look at the newest 911, codenamed 991, as tested in Life this week. It looks just like before, especially with that iconic frog-like profile.
But the moment you see it on the road, it feels instantly new. The slimmer rear lights, clearer circular headlamps with a row of LED lights below them play to that effect.
It may look like a facelift of the old model, known internally as 997, but truth be told, it is evolution at its best, which is hardly surprising then.
In spite of that familiar shape, the package has been slightly enlarged. The wheelbase, for instance, has grown by 100mm. And if you thought you can now move around another three persons from place to place, think again.
Yes, space up front now feels airier and accommodates people of most sizes.
But the rear perches remain pathetic to sit in: you still sit down with your knees up and try looking for head or legroom which is hardly there. Even children are inclined to complain.
Equally pointless are the backrests that fold down to create a shelf rather than a usable boot _ like before. And speaking of cargo space, the most that can be taken up front is a not-too-big suitcase. That's the 911's usual tradition and its compromise.
The driving environment is all too familiar, as well. The classic panel dial set-up remains intact and the concept of the centre console has been lifted from the Cayenne and Panamera.
Fortunately, the switches in the 911 don't feel as fussily scattered as in those niche-diversifying Porsches, but you still need some lessons in rocket science to truly understand how all of those functions work.
Which naturally means that the 911 isn't free from ergonomic faults. The steering wheel _ even in its highest setting _ slightly obscures some information readouts on the panel. The same goes for the long paddle-shifters for the PDK automatic gearbox.
But all this aside, it's such a nice place to be, the 911. Like with all other Porsches, there's a great sense of bullet-proof quality in the car.
But here's the best bit of the 911 and, perhaps, the part to practically eclipse the 911's flaws entirely and make it a winner against any possible conceivable rival within the 15 million baht bracket of sports cars in Thailand.
It's none other than the driving experience, which isn't surprising again because the 911 was always about that.
The most notable improvements in the Boxer flat-six came with the 997, so Porsche has sat back comfortably and forwarded it into the 991 _ with tweaks in power outputs, of course, to keep potential buyers from moaning.
The basic Carrera, for instance, has a more powerful 350hp (despite a smaller 3.4-litre capacity) and the go-faster Carrera S 400hp (via an unchanged 3.8-litre displacement).
As you all well know now, Porsche's latest engines not only became more powerful but also more frugal, thanks to energy-saving devices like automatic stop/start. Plus, the 991 weighs around 40kg less than the 997.

Aldermen debate pedestrian warning signals
Aldermen voted 6-3 this week to recommend purchasing flashing lights to be installed at pedestrian crossings at East Grant Street and Maple Avenue and just east of the West Adams Street and Wigwam Hollow Road intersection.
“This discussion goes back to last year,” said City Administrator Dean Torreson at Tuesday’s city council committee of the whole meeting. “It was not in the budget, but it is in this year’s budget.”
The council’s public safety committee recommended purchase of light poles from the Wisconsin-based Traffic & Parking Control Company (TAPCO) at a cost of $13,880. Each pole would feature an LED-framed pedestrian crossing symbol which would be button-activated by pedestrians wishing to cross the street.
Alderman Dave Dorsett noted that there have been no pedestrian accidents reported at either intersection in at least a year, and that Illinois law already requires motorists to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk. “I think this will give people an artificial sense of security,” he said.
Alderman Tom Koch also expressed concern about the purchase. “We have signs that are very visible now,” he said, “but people don’t stop.”
Speaking in support of the new lights, Alderman Lou Gilbert said, “I think it’s tough to put a dollar value on one of our children.”
“I don’t think we need to wait until an incident to do something,” said council member Kay Hill. “I think these lights will attract attention.”
Alderman Don Wynn joined Koch and Dorsett in voting against the purchase recommendation. He later said he isn’t sure the pedestrian lights will be that effective in stopping traffic.
Also this week, aldermen discussed equipment purchases for the Macomb Public Works Department. “I feel we got some pretty good prices this time,” said Public Works Director Jason Bainter in discussing price quotes for a wheel loader and for a tractor and mower.
Bainter recommended the purchase of a John Deere wheel loader from Martin Equipment for $127,000 plus the trade-in of the department’s 1988 model.
The department had been using two tractors with its mowers but Bainter said they would only use the new one, which he recommended purchasing from Heritage Equipment for $48,500 plus a tractor trade-in.
Bainter said mowers would be purchased from Martin Equipment for slightly more than $36,000. Martin has agreed to attach the mowers to the Heritage tractor. He said the equipment purchases are well under the amounts budgeted.
Dorsett asked for a delay in purchase until the Illinois General Assembly adjourns. Other aldermen agreed that the money should not be spent until the city knows whether there will be any change in anticipated state revenues.

Every day can be be Earth Day at MSTC
Mid-State Technical College, and Wisconsin's 15 other technical colleges, are leading the way for a sustainable future. In addition to educating students for careers in renewable energy occupations, such as geothermal, wind and solar, Wisconsin's Technical Colleges are incorporating the principles of sustainability into the coursework of traditional occupational programs.
MSTC offers a variety of programs centered in sustainability, much of it the first of its kind in the Wisconsin Technical College System. Associate degree programs at MSTC include biorefinery technician, energy efficiency technician, renewable electricity technician, renewable energy specialist and renewable thermal energy technician. Countless graduates will help business and industry integrate sustainable practices into everyday operations.
We promote sustainability by purchasing recycled paper products, recycling paper and plastic bottles, reusing office supplies and using biodegradable products like cups and trash bags. Unique new water stations encourage the use of refillable water bottles and provide a digital tally of the number of plastic bottles saved from disposal. Urban forestry students have planted thousands of trees, shrubs and flowers as a part of their learning experience.
One MSTC club, Students Environmentally United for a Sustainable Society, or SEUSS, promotes environmental sustainability by engaging students, employees and members of our communities in activities, education and a proactive lifestyle of sustainability.
Our building automation systems are designed to increase energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint. We take advantage of off-peak electricity to make ice at night that then is used in air conditioning during the day. Computer labs are cooled with outdoor air rather than air conditioning whenever possible. We also reduce energy usage through LED and other energy-efficient light fixtures, solar tube lighting, extra insulation, motion balance sensors, carpooling and modified hours of operation.
Faculty and students in our five renewable energy programs are using Wisconsin Rapids campus facilities as learning laboratories and testing grounds, their hands-on learning an investment in making the college more energy efficient. Solar panels one day will feed directly into our Wisconsin Rapids campus, reducing our need for electricity from fossil fuel sources.
Thermal energy collectors will provide primary heat for several large areas. A buyback meter will capture electricity produced from classroom solar panels, an ethanol generator, wind turbines and bio-diesel fuel generator when they are not being used as teaching tools.
The new Center for Sustainability and Energy Technology, a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certifiable building, eventually might have a green roof -- a layer of vegetation that provides additional insulation and lessens runoff.

Personal Best Performances Galore at Cornell
The biggest meet of the season for the track and field teams is right on the horizon: the Mid-American Conference championships. Judging by the team's performance this weekend at Cornell, it's peaking at just the right time in preparation for it.
The Bulls traveled to Ithaca to compete in the Marc Denault Invitational, which would serve as a tune-up for the Bulls in preparation for the championship meet next week. Buffalo traveled light for this trip – leaving behind most of its roster – but the competitors that made the trek had career days.
Junior thrower Kristy Woods led the way for Buffalo, earning Field Athlete of the Meet honors. Her highlight came in the weighted throw, where she tossed a personal best 61-10.50 feet, blowing past her previous best by over four inches.
Woods was not finished setting personal records either, as she later would go on to win the women's shot put, throwing 50 feet. Sophomore thrower Rachael Roberts finished second in the event, throwing for a personal best of 47-10 feet.
The Bulls' throwing prowess wasn't limited to the women's squad either. All–MAC performer Rob Golabek has led the way for the Bulls for much of his career, and this meet was no exception. The senior finished on top of the shot put once again for Buffalo.
The invitational was not a scoring meet but there were several teams there and they were served noticed on Saturday, as the Bulls had a great showing in other events besides throwing.
Junior Tomarris Bell had his best performance of the season in the triple jump. He shattered his previous best by four feet when he jumped 46-10.25 feet. Bell also competed in the men's 60-meter dash and finished seventh.
Coach Vicki Mitchell feels as if the dedication and focus during practice time is what has led to some Bulls breaking out and really doing well in the later stages of the season.
"I think the team is really seeing the results of the hard work and are really coming together," Mitchell said. "The harder they want to work the better they are, and I know the coaches are very pleased with the team and how it is progressing."
Even though the Marc Denault Invitational had no technical winner, the Bulls can count this as a victory in several respects. The invitational served as an opportunity for struggling members to regain confidence, and for others to work out some flaws in their technique. And while some were getting back into the groove others were getting much needed rest before next week's big competition.
"For the athletes that didn't compete today that rested this weekend, that just means they are extra fresh, hungry, and prime for next week's competition," Mitchell said. "It's good for the several people who were competing weekend after weekend to just have a mental refresher so they can go into that conference meet refocused and ready to work hard."
The Bulls have never won the MAC Indoor Championship before, but with the team hitting its stride so late in the season, Mitchell and the rest of the Bulls are hoping that changes this year.

Senior Living: Thoughtful gifts are always appreciated
There are two kinds of people. Those who are ready for Christmas by noon on Black Friday, and those who are not.
This column won't be of much use to those who have their lights up, holiday decorations artfully placed throughout the house, Christmas cards addressed, stamped and ready to mail, and last but not least, presents wrapped and under the tree or already dropped off at the post office. Keep reading if you still have shopping to do.
It's easy to shop for kids who make detailed Christmas lists and teenagers who love gift cards and electronic gadgets. It gets harder as people grow older. We hear a lot of wives complain that their husband just goes out and purchases what they want (or think they need) without regard to timing of a special occasion such as a birthday or Christmas. Husbands are perplexed when their wife seems like a professional shopper whose bargain hunting skills can't be matched.
Seniors may be the most difficult to shop for at Christmastime. After all, seniors have lived through many Christmases. Selecting gifts that can be appreciated can be a daunting task. Dietary restrictions or physical limitations may make the gift inappropriate or just awkwardly received.
People value gifts differently. Some believe a gift is the thing that represents a thoughtful expression of love — taking the time to select the right item and spending hard-earned money. Others would like the gift of yourself — giving your time to show your love, rather than giving a thing.
We have some ideas for those who want things, and those who value the gift of your time.
Food items — keep in mind dietary restrictions. Candy, nuts, salty snacks, specialty coffees may be difficult to consume for those who suffer from diabetes, digestive issues, tooth problems, high blood pressure, etc. Instead, give herbal teas, hot cocoa, mints, hard candy or home-baked goods that fit within their dietary restrictions.
Entertainment items — keep in mind physical limitations such as sight and hearing. Give large print books and crossword puzzles, a full spectrum light lamp, a folding lap table or desk, books on CD, or a headphone designed to receive TV broadcasts. Purchase a CD featuring music from their era.
Clothing items — keep in mind mobility limitations. Some shoes with heavy treads can cause trips and falls. Leather soled shoes don't catch on carpeting, buttons, zippers and snaps may be hard to manage for those with arthritis. Look for garments with soft and stretchy fabric in the person's favorite color.
Create your own gift certificate for an event — accompany your loved one to lunch or dinner at a favorite restaurant, a trip to the mall, movies or Turtle Bay Museum.
Give a "Fix-It Ticket" — offer to fix something in their home such as a leaky faucet, crumbling step or wobbly hand rail. Install grab bars, a shower seat in the bathroom and place nonskid strips in the tub or shower. For those who aren't so handy, change the batteries in their smoke detectors and replace burned out light bulbs.

Verdict sparks debate on medical liability law
Heartland Nursing Home and its parent company, ManorCare Inc., have asked a circuit judge to review a $90.5 million verdict against it in an abuse and neglect case.
Charleston attorney Brian Glasser, hired by the care facility to handle any post-trial motions and appeals, said he filed a motion with Kanawha Circuit Judge Paul Zakaib Tuesday to consider whether the verdict complies with a state law capping such damages.
That law, enacted in 2003, sought to limit monetary awards in medical liability lawsuits to $500,000 and also limit punitive damages. But whether the recent case, which prompted a jury to grant a much larger compensation, fits the intention of the law is up for debate.
Glasser believes the law applies and will ask Zakaib to award the family of Dorothy Douglas not $90.5 million, but $500,000 plus an adjustment for inflation and a punitive damage percentage of that.
The jury reached its verdict Aug. 4 after two weeks of testimony concerning the care given to Douglas while she was a patient at Heartland in Kanawha City two years ago. The family contended Douglas was deprived of proper hydration and that led tube to her death.
Zakaib has not yet ordered a judgment on the jury's verdict and has scheduled a hearing Oct. 18 to hear post-trial motions, including Glasser's.
Glasser said, "Both parties say the caps somehow affect the verdict. They are saying 20 percent of the compensatory award is capped, and I'm saying all of it is capped."
Huntington attorney Paul Farrell, president of the West Virginia Association for Justice, whose members are plaintiff's attorneys, said the verdict has been discussed a lot recently in legal circles.

Modular LED street lighting
Modular LED street lighting
Makers of LED optics are vying for business as streetlight buyers discover the benefits of solid-state lighting, writes Technology Editor Steve Bush.
It is not necessarily efficiency that make streetlight aficionados sit up, as starkly yellow old-tech low-pressure sodium lights offer 300 lm/W, compared with 100 lm/W from LEDs.
What is attractive, is long life.
LED luminairs have no vacuum or electrode-eating plasma and well designed example are expected to live for over 50,000 hours.
And the point-source nature of LEDs allows fine control of light direction and a consequent reduction of waste, spill and glare.
The challenge for streetlight makers is that hundreds of beam patterns are required illuminate different streets.
To keep their inventory simple, optical firms are taking a modular approach so that a few different components can be mixed and matched to suit any situation.

Berkshire's Carclo Technical Plastics has both refractive ('optics') and reflective elements in its modular streetlight offering (see thumbnail above).
"It uses a combination to provide a solution for a variety of road geometries and light output characteristics," said Carclo. "An optic is employed to control the light distribution along the road while a reflector controls light distribution across the road."
Different reflectors and optics clipped into 290x80x40mm 10LED modules, then these are mounted side-by-side to get the required intensity.

What Everyone Should Know About Energy Saving Candle Bulbs
What Everyone Should Know About Energy Saving Candle Bulbs

Nether Prov eyes streetlights
Decision-making on the installation of more energy-efficient streetlights will hinge on the payback period, township officials say.
Money for changing of the lights would come from a loan Nether Providence plans to take out to cover the costs of replacing a small bridge on Woodward Road. That loan is expected to be finalized in the near future.
Currently on the table are proposals to replace the existing streetlights with either induction or LED lights.
Unlike a traditional bulb, induction lights use a magnetic field generator to electrically excite the phosphorous coating on the inside of a glass tube. LED, or light-emitting diode, lights are small light sources that become illuminated by the movement of electrons through a semi-conductor material.
The approaches were discussed by township commissioners at their March 7 meeting, and Commissioner Mike Dougherty said the payback period for induction lighting was estimated at about eight and a half years versus 17 years for LED lights.
Commissioner Matthew Sullivan said that kind of data would influence his vote.
“For me, it comes down to the one with the shorter payback period,” he said.
While LED lights would use less electricity, the township would not realize those savings since PECO charges a flat rate for street lighting, Commissioner Frank Noyes said.
Resident Soren Spring suggested inviting a firm to install new streetlights — either at no cost or a discount — in exchange for the ability to showcase and market it to other communities.
But Sullivan said any project costing more than $10,000 would, by law, have to go out to bid, which could rule out such a possibility.
