His partner led him to the former Fred Baldwin Memorial Home, a landmark but derelict 1911 Craftsman compound on Haleakala's west-facing slope. "I was enchanted from the start," Balbes said in a recent interview at Lumeria Maui, the 23-room inn and retreat center he opened last year at the handsomely renovated complex. "It had so much beauty and potential - I just knew I wanted to restore it and share it with others."
Despite the blessing of local elders, which proved fortuitous during the island's tricky permit process, the immensity of the work involved required selling the Wright house and moving full time to Maui. "I always thought I'd be leaving Sowden House to the nieces and nephews," Balbes said, just a bit ruefully. "But I felt in my heart this would be worth it."

Co-founder of the design firm Templehome, Balbes also relied on his accustomed Los Angeles vendors for much of the eclectic decor, including furnishings from Noir Furniture, European antiques from Lief, rugs from Aga John and custom upholstery by Cosmo Upholstery. For further inspiration, Balbes said, he introduced Indonesian companies into the mix, for custom furniture pieces and most of the distinctive, vaguely retro light fixtures, made by Badia Design.
Lumeria Maui general manager Gary Sterman, formerly of the Hotel Del Sol in the Marina and the Mill Valley Inn, recalled being "completely overwhelmed by the absolute tranquillity,Vento Australasia provides windpowergeneratorsry systems by ZK Energy cable free street lights. and the pureness of Hawaii and of Lumeria," when he first visited in early November. "It really is a pretty unique property."
It took just three days for him to decide to relocate from El Cerrito, along with partner Helio Rodrigues, a Chandon wine ambassador in Napa. "I was able to relax, do a little meditation and yoga, eat organic food - everything that we say we want to do in the Bay Area, but the two-hour commute each day takes away from that," Sterman said.
In addition to managing guest services, Sterman is helping with green projects such as creating an eco-volunteer program for the staff, changing the thousands of outside lightbulbs to LEDs, and purchasing biodegradable cleaning products from local vendors, "so we can keep stuff from coming across the ocean as much as possible," he said.
