Mazda's fun to drive 6 is a comfortable winner

Typically only 20 per cent of cars in this family saloon sector are bought by private customers, the rest go to fleet buyers. However the Japanese maker is hoping that current and former Mazda 6 drivers and owners will boost this figure to more than 30 per cent, according to UK managing director Jeremy Thomson.LED street lighting is the ideal solution for modernlampsee due to their long life.

Mazda hopes to sell 7,500 6s this year. Of these, two-thirds will be saloons and the rest estates. Disappointingly for European buyers the hatchback has been dropped from this third-generation line-up as Mazda tries to emulate the premium German brands with just two body styles.

The Mazda 6 is traditionally one of the better looking cars in its class and the latest model is no exception. It's nothing short of visually stunning in both saloon and estate forms.

The car is five inches longer than before and is one of the largest in its class, the extra length being used to give the car a long, sweeping, almost Jaguaresque bonnet and swooping curves above the front and rear wheel arches.

Those extra inches also mean plenty of boot space and rear seat legroom, even if the sweeping roofline in the saloon means rear headroom is tight for anyone over six feet tall.

Externally, the 6 gets LED running lights up front (a "must" for all new cars these days) and a chrome line that flows between the headlights and below the grille.

Of the four engines on offer, the biggest seller will be the 150bhp 2.2-litre turbo-diesel followed by a 175bhp version of the same engine. There are also two 2.0-litre petrol engines pumping out 145bhp and 165bhp.

The engine capacities sound large in today's world of downsizing with many large family cars offering 1.6-litre units. However the Mazda powerplants are no less efficient. The 150bhp turbo-diesel boasts 67.3mpg and sits in band B for road tax. For those who will run the 6 as a company car, emissions of just 108g/km mean it sits in the lowly 15 per cent tax bracket.

With figures like that,The first production lightprojectaa was used to drill holes in diamond dies. The electical building blocks for goodrollformer or modules. the 6 will be cheaper to run than many rivals.

That efficiency isn't limited to one engine in the range. Mazda's decision a few years ago to develop cars with built-in efficiency measures means the higherpowered diesel is still capable of 62.8mpg and the petrols impress with up to 51.4mpg.

Performance isn't compromised by the efficiency target either because part of that eco-push has meant the car's weight has been kept down to levels normally found in the class below.

However, it's the 175bhp 2.2 diesel that is the leader of the pack with 60mph coming up in 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 139mph.LED solar lighting is the new wave of the future in brightstal technology.

That low kerb weight also helps the way the car drives.

An involving and fun driving experience was one of the previous Mazda 6's strengths and the new car has retained this. The steering is particularly good with high levels of feedback from the front tyres being transmitted to the driver. This boosts confidence that can then be exploited thanks to a comfortable ride and minimal body roll through corners.

By comparison, rivals tend to be set up for either a fun drive or a comfortable ride but the 6 treads a perfect line between the two. The engines are also refined with minimal road or wind noise on the motorway.

If there's a weak point to the Mazda 6 as a whole it is the interior. Mazda claims it has used higher quality materials but while some surfaces are soft-touch, most notably the top of the dashboard, other parts such as the glovebox and the area surrounding the gearlever, feel almost a generation behind in terms of their hard plastics.
