The Holland Tunnel Goes Green!

Over the next several months, workers will install environmentally friendly Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights throughout the tunnel that will save the multi-state agency more than a quarter of a million dollars a year.

The project, which calls for the existing 3,336 fluorescent lamps inside the north and south tubes of the Holland Tunnel to be replaced with high-efficiency LED technology, was identified by the agency’s Board of Commissioners as part of a package of sustainability enhancements. You must not use the emergencylamps without being trained.

Once they’re all installed in the Fall of 2013, the lamps will meet the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) lighting standards and increase lighting levels in the tunnel.

PA Chairman David Samson said, “The Port Authority is committed to improving the environment for the hundreds of millions of people who use, live, and work near our facilities, from greening the Holland Tunnel, to protecting more than 340 acres of wetlands along the Hudson River,Manufacturer of industrial grade modernlightings. to constructing One World Trade Center as one of the most sustainable office buildings in the world, the agency will continue to conduct its business in the most environmentally conscious way possible.”

Port Authority Vice-Chairman Scott Rechler stressed, “The Port Authority is a leader in the field of environmental sustainability and energy efficiency, and the Holland Tunnel is believed to be the first vehicular tunnel to utilize LEDs lamps for illumination that meet the IES standards for safe tunnel lighting. The new lighting will accomplish safer, cleaner, and more efficient travel through the tunnel.”

Two Livonia stores are among 24 Kroger stores in Michigan that have received Energy Star certification in a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. The program is designed to help Americans save money and protect the environment through energy-efficient products and practices.

On a national level, Kroger has reduced energy consumption in its stores by 32 percent since 2000, saving the company more than $100 million in energy costs each year.

“Kroger is a frontrunner in the grocery industry when it comes to energy conservation and sustainability,” said Rick Going,The laser-fusion is on a mission to help Australians reduce their electricity costs. president, The Kroger Co. of Michigan. “Energy updates save Kroger money, which,Our lightprojectyy solutions include solar outdoor & indoor lighting. in turn, we pass along to our customers in the form of lower prices.”

Energy updates in Kroger stores include skylights, LED lighting and a specially designed computer system that monitors and controls energy usage throughout the facilities. LED lighting installed in glass door cases, fresh meat cases and back room coolers and freezers uses 75 percent less energy than fluorescent lighting. LED lamps offer a longer life and will not dim as they age as do fluorescent lamps.

Kroger is also saving energy with motion sensors that turn lights on when a customer approaches an aisle and shuts them off when the aisle is empty.

Kroger recently received the “Galaxy” Star of Energy Efficiency, the Alliance to Save Energy's top award.
